How to trim lawn edges without wasting whipper-snipper line
Prepare the boundary, use only the cutting end of the line, take shallow passes and stop grinding against concrete, wire, rocks or tree bark.

Quick answer: keep the line off the hard edge
Whipper-snipper line lasts better when its cutting end meets grass rather than repeatedly striking concrete, wire, rocks or timber. Clear the route, make the edge visible, set the tool as its manual directs and take a light first pass. Deepen or tidy the cut only where needed.
Do not press the mowing head into the ground to make the edge look sharper. STIHL Australia warns that ground contact wears the head quickly, while manufacturer line guidance recognises that contact with solid objects shears line. If the boundary itself is doing most of the cutting, change the angle, slow down or use another edging tool.
- Expose the boundary before starting.
- Let the end of the line cut the grass.
- Use shallow passes on overgrown edges.
- Stop and inspect instead of feeding more line into the same obstacle.
Creating an edge and maintaining one are different jobs
A line trimmer is useful for maintaining an established boundary and reaching grass the mower misses. It is less controlled when asked to create a new trench through turf and compacted soil. Husqvarna Australia distinguishes an edger, which creates a boundary with a guided vertical blade, from a grass trimmer, which maintains borders with consumable nylon line.
For a new edge, use a suitable manual or powered edging tool, then use the line trimmer for regular upkeep. For a short, detailed edge beside plants or fragile materials, hand or cordless grass shears may be slower but easier to control.

Prepare the boundary before the line spins
Walk the whole route first. Pick up stones, sticks, wire, toys and loose edging pieces that could be thrown or wrap around the head. Rake away heavy clippings and uncover any plastic, steel or timber border hidden by grass.
Inspect the guard, head and exposed line as your manual directs. Confirm the approved line diameter, the correct line length and whether the model is designed to rotate or adjust for vertical edging. Do not copy an online grip or turn a fixed head sideways if the instructions for your machine do not support it.
Choose whether to trim before or after mowing based on the finish and collection method you want. STIHL recommends trimming first so the mower can collect clippings; Husqvarna presents mowing first so the finished lawn height is visible. Either order can work—the important part is that the boundary is clear and you can see the intended height and line.
A controlled edging sequence
Practise on an open, forgiving section before working beside a rendered wall, irrigation tube or young tree. Keep both hands on the tool and use a stable, upright stance.
- 1
Set the tool for you
Adjust the shaft, handle or harness only as the manufacturer describes. Set the edging position if the model provides one.
- 2
Check the throwing direction
Use the guard and working direction specified in the manual. Position yourself so debris is directed away from people, windows, vehicles and fragile garden areas.
- 3
Start with a light pass
Bring only the cutting end of the line into the grass. Keep the head off the soil and hard boundary.
- 4
Move steadily along the line
Watch the point where line meets grass. A slow, continuous pass is easier to correct than repeatedly plunging into the same spot.
- 5
Take height in stages
For an overgrown edge, remove the upper growth before working down to the final height instead of burying the head in the full depth.
- 6
Stop before investigating
Shut down and prevent accidental starting as the manual directs before clearing a wrap, inspecting the head or changing line.
Adjust the method for each boundary
Different edges fail in different ways. Listen for the change from cutting grass to slapping a solid object, then back off rather than treating noise as progress.
- Concrete or pavers: follow the grass side of the joint and leave a small gap instead of scraping the face continuously.
- Chain mesh or wire: line can catch and disappear quickly; use shears for the last strip if you cannot keep clear.
- Timber or plastic edging: reduce contact to avoid marking the edge or cutting a concealed piece.
- Gravel and rock: clear loose stones and consider a dedicated edger or hand tool where thrown debris cannot be controlled.
- Irrigation: expose and mark feeder tube before trimming; repair or reroute vulnerable tube rather than relying on memory.
- Corners: stop, reposition and make a short controlled pass instead of swinging the head around the corner blind.
Protect plants
Keep line away from trunks and soft stems
Do not run line against a tree trunk to remove the last tuft of grass. Whitehorse City Council advises against using a line trimmer close to a trunk because damage to the lower bark weakens its first defence against pathogens.
Pull grass by hand, use hand shears or maintain a clear mulched ring without piling mulch against the trunk. The small amount of extra work is preferable to circling the bark with repeated line strikes. Give exposed roots, irrigation risers and soft plant stems the same space.

If the line still disappears too quickly
Separate an edging problem from a loading or compatibility problem. Test the tool in ordinary grass away from hard surfaces. If the line lasts there but vanishes along one boundary, change the approach to that boundary. If it feeds badly everywhere, inspect the spool, winding, approved diameter, eyelets and line length using the manual.
GardenMate’s existing line guide covers diameter, loading, storage and why line breaks. It also records first-hand experience with one STIHL line. This edging guide does not repeat that product discussion; it focuses on the job and the places where line is commonly wasted.
Follow your manual
Safety before finish quality
A line trimmer can throw stones and other debris. STIHL Australia says to use safety glasses with appropriate face protection and suitable work clothing, and to keep people at least 15 metres away when trimming with a powered grass trimmer or brushcutter. Your model’s manual remains the controlling source for personal protective equipment, hearing protection, inspection and exclusion distance.
Stop if a person or animal enters the work area. Keep windows, vehicles and other property outside the throwing zone. Do not remove the guard, defeat the line-limiting blade or handle the head until the machine is stopped and isolated as its instructions require.
